Paul Sullivan & 550 Words Of Nothingness

sullivan.jpgLou Piniella fed the fixation and fetish of the Chicago Cubs press corps today by saying:

"You know, I'm not going to [rule] out the possibility of throwing Soriano in on that mix either," he said. "We'll see how it works out. ... We can play around with that a little this spring."

He of course was referring to the possibility that Alfonso Soriano may not bat leadoff this season.

Problem is, he also said this:

"He said, 'Lou, you can do whatever you want,' " Piniella said. "So we'll see. To me, he's still my leadoff hitter. I love him in the leadoff spot. But we can see how it looks. We've got plenty of time in the spring to see where things shake out."

So does that sound like a "family-sized can of worms," as Paul Sullivan put it? Really? Either way, it was enough to prompt Sullivan to write 550 words on the matter.

The Tribune helpfully included a poll with the story, asking:

"We know you want him down in the lineup, but do you believe Lou Piniella will actually move Alfonso Soriano out of the leadoff spot?"

"Yes, it's about time" or "No because there aren't better options."

Given the way the question is phrased, I'm not eligible to participate in the poll, as I don't want him moved down in the lineup. So I'm thinking it isn't scientific.
