Paul Sullivan, Struggling To Be Relevant

Paul Sullivan is like the over-eager dog who always chases the ball - even when it isn't actually thrown.

Two days after working himself into a lather over the possibility that Alfonso Soriano may not bat leadoff, he tries to mock Lou Piniella for saying it is improbable Soriano would bat anywhere other than leadoff:

MESA, Ariz. -- In what may be the Cubs' version of circular logic, Alfonso Soriano went from leadoff man to middle-of-the-order hitter to leadoff man without even playing a game.

Really, Paul? When did Soriano go to middle-of-the-order hitter? This is what Lou said earlier in the week:

"You know, I'm not going to [rule] out the possibility of throwing Soriano in on that mix either," he said. "We'll see how it works out. ... We can play around with that a little this spring."

But he also said this:

"He said, 'Lou, you can do whatever you want,' " Piniella said. "So we'll see. To me, he's still my leadoff hitter. I love him in the leadoff spot. But we can see how it looks. We've got plenty of time in the spring to see where things shake out."

So, to sum up: Soriano was never a middle-of-the-order hitter.

Perhaps Paul should stay out of the sun. He's going daffy - and is just embarrassing himself at this point.
