Taking A Walk In The NL Central

This St. Louis Post-Dispatch story includes the seemingly astounding fact that the Brewers had 1,203 strikeouts and just 550 walks in 2008 for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.19 to 1.

Pretty impressive, except that was for their batters (their pitchers were 2.1 to 1 - while pitching).

But is that so out of line with the rest of the National League? The division? As a league, the offensive ratio was 2.04 strikeouts for each walk last year. For pitchers, it was 2.03 to 1 (the difference attributable to interleague play).

Here's how the rest of the NL Central shaped up:

Astros*
Batters: 2.34 to 1 (1,051 Ks & 449 BB in 5,451 AB)
Pitchers: 2.23 to 1
Difference: - 0.11

Brewers
Batters: 2.19 to 1 (1,203 Ks & 550 BB in 5,535 AB)
Pitchers: 2.10 to 1
Difference: - 0.09

Cardinals
Batters: 1.71 to 1 (985 Ks & 577 BB in 5636 AB)
Pitchers: 1.93 to 1
Difference: + 0.22

Cubs
Batters: 1.86 to 1 (1,186 Ks & 636 BB in 5,588 AB)
Pitchers: 2.31 to 1
Difference: +0.47

Pirates
Batters: 2.19 to 1 (1,039 Ks & 474 BB in 5,628 AB)
Pitchers: 1.47 to 1
Difference: - 0.72

Reds
Batters: 2.01 to 1 (1,125 Ks & 560 BB in 5,465 AB)
Pitchers: 2.20 to 1
Difference: +0.19

This proves little, of course, though there are some interesting tidbits:

1. Batters for the Cardinals, Cubs and Reds struck out at lower rates than the rest of the National League.

2. Pitchers for the Astros, Brewers and Cubs struck out batters at higher rates than the rest of the National League.

3. That leaves the Cubs as the only team that ended up on the right side of the divide in both categories.

4. Dusty Baker's Reds were third in the division in walks behind the Cubs and Cardinals, though Dusty took care of that by getting rid of Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. at the trade deadline. They were the two players who led the Reds in walks in 2008 even though they only played roughly two-thirds of the season in Cincinnati.

5. The Cubs batters' rate of 1.86 strikeouts for every walk in 2008 was an improvement from 2.11 to 1 in 2007 (Lou's first year), 2.35 to 1 in 2006 (Dusty's last year, when the Cubs managed just 395 walks all year), and 2.20 to 1 in 2005 (when they walked 420 times).

6. In other words, the Cubs increased their number of walks by 61 percent in two years under Lou Piniella. Yikes.

*Statistics after Sept. 12 are in the process of being eliminated because the Astros were not emotionally prepared to play baseball, due to a hurricane.
