Can We Drop This "Nation" Business Now?
Written by wrigleyville

Red Sox Nation makes a certain amount of sense. Bleacher Nation is a catchy name for the new Cubs blog. But this "Nation" business has officially become passe with this lead in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: The assumption by many in Brewer Nation is that general manager Doug Melvin will follow the signing of closer Trevor Hoffman by landing one of the higher profile starting pitchers remaining on the free-agent market. Brewer Nation? It's time for a little perspective. According to Wikipedia (it must be true), "the phrase 'Red Sox Nation' was first coined by Boston Globe feature writer Nathan Cobb in an October 20, 1986, article about split allegiances among fans in Connecticut during the 1986 World Series between the Red Sox and the New York Mets." It has since been expanded to describe the team's national following - and the phenomenon of Red Sox fans making up a big share of the crowd during road games. Which brings us back to this alleged "Brewer Nation." Can there really be a Brewer Nation when the team's announcers get genuinely excited when Brewers fans make up (maybe) a majority of the fans for a game against the Cubs in Miller Park. By that definition, Brewer Nation barely spreads to West Allis.
