Canadians Turning On Dempster

Larry Walker, someone named Peter Orr, and a curler or two are complaining that Ryan Dempster isn't going to play for Canada in the World Baseball Classic, according to Ken Rosenthal:

Still, even some members of Team Canada seem miffed at Dempster, saying that he originally indicated he would participate in the WBC.

Infielder Peter Orr told the Sun, "I talked to Matt Stairs in September and he'd just talked to Dempster -- Dempster said he was playing then."

For his part, Dempster seems to be able to put it into proper perspective:

"Everyone says, 'You're already throwing in a game at the beginning of March.' Yeah. True. But not at that kind of adrenaline, that kind of impact," Dempster said. "On March 10, I'm worried about trying to spot a four-seamer. I'm not trying to snap off a slider against Bobby Abreu playing for Venezuela in the bottom of the fifth inning.

"If I were a position player, it wouldn't even be a question. But with pitchers, it's hard to stay healthy in general. I'm going to do everything I can to reduce my chances (of getting hurt)."

Good points, which makes the hectoring from the likes of Phil Rogers all the more preposterous. Just last week, Rogers lectured players for "being afraid to play baseball."

Then again, Phil Rogers believed Mark Prior should have been re-signed. And Phil Rogers is wrong about everything.
