Chicago Media Shames Itself With Bradley Coverage
Written by wrigleyville

The Chicago media is positively giddy to have the opportunity to psychoanalyze Milton Bradley for the next three years. Mercurial! Moody! Combustible! Yippee! And we get to exaggerate! Crank up the hyperbole machine! A representative story comes from Neil Hayes of the Sun-Times: Despite a history that includes confrontations with teammates, managers, fans, broadcasters and umpires, Bradley is not a bad guy. In fact, he’s very intelligent and often charming. That’s on a good day. Neil uses the plural on each of them, as if they occurred daily. So let's take a moment to look at the long, sordid history of one Milton Bradley - the tales of excitement and adventure that have Chicago reporters smearing themselves in baby oil and glitter with glee: Teammates? Teammate, as far as I know. And Jeff Kent deserves a punch in the mouth daily, out of principle. Plus, we never see teammates squabbling, do we? Or do we? Managers? Manager (Eric Wedge), as far as I know. Always best to listen to the boss. But didn't Ted Lilly actually punch his manager? Lilly also had problems with his catcher in Toronto. Where was the outcry with the Lilly signing? Fans? He apologized for slamming a bottle down in the stands that had been thrown at him by a fan. Worse things have happened - at Wrigley. And do fans bear any responsibility here? Broadcasters? Nothing happened, but everybody apparently is convinced the good and pure Ryan Lefebvre would be six feet under had Ron Washington not intervened. Personally, I prefer the Alfonso Soriano approach to broadcasterly relations ("Who's Bob Brenly?"). Umpires? Bradley tore his ACL while being held back by Padres manager Bud Black after umpire Mike Winters baits him at first base. Winters is suspended for the rest of the year for the incident, while Bradley received no punishment (beyond having to rehab his knee and miss part of 2008). I don't think I'm missing anything, as the Sun-Times helpfully has a "Milton Bradley Incidents" timeline that includes seven items. The others are calling a reporter an "Uncle Tom" and throwing a bag of balls on the field after an ejection. So to recap: He doesn't like Jeff Kent (good judgment). He squabbled with Eric Wedge over discipline issues (bad judgment). He confronted a fan who he believed had thrown a bottle at him (would you - I mean if you weren't such a pussy?). He ran upstairs to "confront" a broadcaster (hmm - maybe he's too slow). He apparently doesn't think umpires should provoke him (MLB seemed to agree). It's a mess, to be sure. But this is a Chicago media that tolerates and celebrates Lou's tirades (though increasingly rare) and Ozzie's gay-baiting (ongoing). And when it comes to athlete misbehavior, none of this is anywhere near the off-the-field issues of, say, Tank Johnson (who the Chicago media really wanted to play in the Super Bowl), Mark Chmura (for you Wisconsin guys) or countless doped-up NBA players. Of course not. But the Chicago media has decided - Milton is crazy, and we're going to do our best to drive him out of town. They must be so proud. Other examples can be found here and here and here.
