Cubs Are Committed To Theriot? Really??

Phil Rogers dusts off his keen insight machine to drop this one on an unsuspecting public:

How committed are the Cubs to Ryan Theriot as their shortstop? There was never even internal discussion about pursuing Michael Young, who the Rangers made available after he balked at moving to third base. Young and the Rangers appear to have worked out their differences, meaning it's Hank Blalock the Rangers are trying to trade. ...

Yes, Phil, the Cubs clearly did not discuss acquiring Young because they are that committed to Theriot.

It surely couldn't be the fact that Young is due to make $16 million a year each of the next four years. ... (see, I can use oddly placed ellipses, too!)

Or that Theriot makes pennies on the dollar compared to Young. ...

Or that Young's SLG has slid from .513 to .459 to .418 to .402 over the last four years, while his OPS+ has dropped from 131 to 108 to 107 to 96 in the same time period. ...

No, the Cubs are committed to Theriot's TOOTBLANs, spasmodic defense and 93 OPS+, according to Phil Rogers. Why, they would likely pass if this guy or this guy were to come available.
