Do Injury Concerns Only Matter For Some Players?
Written by wrigleyville

We couldn't help but notice that the proprietor of Bleed Cubbie Blue presented his ever so subtle "Case For Milton Bradley" by listing all of Bradley's missed time during his career (including tons of one- or two-game illnesses or injuries). Needless to say, it is a lengthy list - leading the proprietor to opine: If you're going to pay a free agent like this the money he's going to be asking for (likely in the 3-year, $30 million range), you've got to make certain that you're going to get fulltime production out of him. What's the point of paying that much money and having him out for a third of the season? Good question. He may very well have an argument, but the strength of his position is badly undermined by his earlier advocacy for re-signing Kerry Wood for roughly the same per-year money as it will cost for Bradley (he was last seen complaining about Wood's departure in the comments here). Given that, a logical question would be: Why are injury concerns a red flag for Milton Bradley but not Kerry Wood? Is it because Kerry is (was) the "face of the franchise"? Or is it because Milton Bradley scares him so (see pictures in the post)? A combination of both? Just for the record, here are the missed games for Kerry Wood: Aug 5, 2008: Missed 18 games (finger injury). Aug 3, 2007: Missed 107 games (shoulder injury). Oct 2, 2006: Missed the last 105 games of the regular season (shoulder injury). Jun 6, 2006: Missed 2 games (shoulder injury). May 18, 2006: Missed 39 games (shoulder injury). Oct 2, 2005: Missed 31 games to the end of the regular season (shoulder injury). Aug 5, 2005: Missed 14 games (shoulder injury). Jun 29, 2005: Missed 52 games (right shoulder injury). Jul 11, 2004: Missed 47 games (tricep injury). Apr 28, 2004: Suspended by MLB for 5 games. Aug 21, 2003: Missed 2 games (back injury). Sep 7, 2001: Missed 31 games (right shoulder tendinitis). The list only goes back to 2001. But there should be a line that reads: 1999: Missed 162 games (broken). So, please, let's all just be honest about what we object to here.
