Doug Melvin Is At It Again

melvin.jpgHere's a brain twister from Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, on the team's reservations about pitcher Yovani Gallardo playing in the World Baseball Classic:

"We've always been in favor of the Classic," said Melvin, who sat down and talked with Gallardo about the subject during the team's activities this weekend. "I enjoy it, myself, personally.

"We'll look into it with Yovani, because of the time missed. He did miss substantial time from last year. You can encourage them not to play. But we don't discourage any player from playing."

On the surface, this is what he said: "It's OK to encourage them NOT to play. But it is not OK to discourage a player from playing."

But you'll notice he shifted voice from one sentence to the next.  So maybe he is saying it is OK for me or others ("you") to encourage the Brewers not to play, but the Brewers ("we") do not do so.

Then again, that would be giving Doug Melvin way too much credit.
