Peavy Watch: Padres Budget Pressures Remain
Written by wrigleyville

Thumbnail image for p1_peavy.jpgThe financial pressures on the San Diego Padres have not changed a bit in the last couple of months:

To meet the $40 million payroll mandated by club chairman John Moores, the Padres apparently need to trade a high-salaried player either before or during the season. Whether Jake Peavy is that player still could hinge on whether prospective Cubs ownership approves a larger payroll for 2010, when Peavy is due $15 million.

Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, who has said Peavy likely will remain with the club until Opening Day, recently confirmed that San Diego's payroll projects about $5 million above budget.

"Right now, what we have projected is between $44 million and $45 million," Alderson said Friday. Asked if that number is about $5 million above budget, Alderson said, "Right now, it would be."

So, to recap:

1. The Padres have to trade Peavy or Brian Giles to meet budget.

2. Brian Giles doesn't want to leave (yet) and wouldn't bring as much back in a trade as Peavy.

3. Peavy only wants to go to a small number of teams, and the Cubs are the only team that seems to want to play ball.

4. The Cubs have spent the last few weeks stockpiling prospects, including a player the Padres had previously tried to obtain.

Maybe, just maybe, something seems to be going on here.

So why, exactly, wouldn't a new Cubs owner approve this deal (assuming the Padres like what the Cubs are offering)? Trading for Jake Peavy would be a hell of a first move for a new owner.
