Revisiting The Soriano-Is-No-Leadoff-Hitter Canard
Written by wrigleyville

Since Dave van Dyck claimed in this morning's Tribune that "it is becoming clear Alfonso Soriano has no leg to stand on - so to speak - in insisting he bat leadoff," it would seem to be a useful time to look at how Chicago Cubs leadoff hitters have fared in recent years.

The first four columns of the following table show the cumulative totals for Cub leadoff hitters for 2005-08. The final column includes Soriano's 2007-08 average season totals while batting leadoff (he averaged 115 games per season, due to injuries).

It's pretty clear something happened in 2007 to significantly improve the performance of Cubs leadoff hitters. I wonder what that was.

In the linked Trib article, van Dyck concludes, "Where to bat Soriano is the most important question of the spring for Piniella - and the one Cubs fans talk about most."

Right. Not finalizing the rotation. Not closer. Not where to bat the ghost of Derrek Lee. The problem is Alfonso Soriano.

Let's hope Lou is scouring the Tribune morningly to get input from van Dyck and the crew as he makes his decisions.

(As a reminder, here is how Cubs leadoff hitters named Alfonso Soriano fared in 2008, compared to how Cubs leadoff hitters not named Alfonso Soriano fared.)
