The Curse Of The Greek Orthodox Priest
Written by wrigleyville
Monday, 19 January 2009
greek-orthodox-priest.jpgAs if the Cubs don't have enough made-up problems, Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney seems to have brought another upon the team - the disappointment of the Greek Orthodox priest he brought to bless the dugout during the 2008 playoffs.

Kenney claimed at the Cubs Convention that the blessing was the priest's idea because he wanted tickets to the game.

Not so, says the priest (via the Trib):

"Kenney told me he wanted a Greek Orthodox priest because [William] Sianis was Greek," said (Rev. James L. Greanias, referring to the tavern owner who placed a hex on the Cubs during the 1945 World Series. "The last thing on my mind was calling the Cubs to ask them to bless the field. In fact, I thought it was a joke at first."

Greanias said he wasn't angry but "disappointed" in Kenney. He said he had written Kenney a three-page letter Monday and had approached Cubs coach Matt Sinatro during a Cubs Caravan stop last week in Valparaiso to offer an apology to manager Lou Piniella.

"Coach Sinatro told me Lou wasn't upset," Greanias said. "But I defended Kenney after it happened, and now he's thrown me under the bus."

Does any other team in any other sport have as much nonsense surrounding them as the Cubs?

(That is not a picture of Rev. Greanias but of a random Greek Orthodox priest found via Google.)
