The Trib's Baseball Blog Is Lousy
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 29 January 2009
Especially for Cubs coverage.
A day after we noted the Trib was beaten badly on the Aaron Heilman trade news, it's worth revisiting the Trib's baseball blog, "Hardball."
The blog would have been perfect for the Trib to slap up the early national reports on the trade, since they were clearly well behind the game. They could have used it to update readers throughout the day. They could have used it period.
But nothing.
And that seems routine for Hardball. Let's look what's up on the front page of the blog now.
1. White Sox honoring Latin American baseball players with a billboard. Riveting.
2. A regurgitation of this press release on the White Sox naming the Spanish radio team.
3. A regurgitation of this press release on something called SoxFest.
4. The White Sox's spring training facility is on schedule for completion. Not early. Not late. On time. Definition of "not news."
5. The White Sox continue to fellate Barack Obama by creating an Obama White Sox hat. This is the most interesting yet, however.
6. An emptying of the notebook on irrelevant White Sox items.
7. Cubs sign a Japanese pitcher to be Kosuke Fukudome's friend. At least this updates readers with some news that probably isn't worth a story in the paper. This was nine days ago.
8. A post on Lou's purging of Dusty-era players. This is good, but it was 10 days ago.
9. White Sox sign Jenks. Fine.
10. Cubs sign Gregg. Fine.
So, of 10 posts on the front page, seven are on the White Sox, including the last six. Only one adds any sort of insight to what is going on with either team. And nothing is particularly timely or competitive. Readers are finding it so engaging that the last five posts have a grand total of zero comments.
In the last two days, the Seattle Times baseball blog noticed the Heilman rumors and examined what it would mean for the Mariners, the New York Times baseball blog noted Heilman's homecoming, and the Daily Herald did a quick post on Garrett Olson not being included in any Peavy deal.
These are things mainstream media baseball blogs are good for - mixing quick analysis with their access to inside sources. That is something, by and large, most of us really can't do and it is a valuable niche to be filled in this new media world.
But the Trib baseball writers? They're just passing along press releases we can read online anyway - or dumping routine signings into a post. Hardball? Hardly.
