Stone & Kaplan Get One Wrong - Intentionally?
Written by wrigleyville
Saturday, 25 July 2009
Steve Stone started it with this, via Twitter (and an account that he doesn't let just anyone see):

BaseballStone Rumor is that tigers are interested in trading for milton bradley. Cubs should fly him in a private jet. #Cubs

Dave Kaplan amplified it with this, via his new blog:

Two very solid baseball sources confirmed for me just moments ago that the Detroit Tigers are interested in Cubs RF Milton Bradley. They believe that Bradley would be a much better fit as a DH than as a right fielder and that he would mesh well with Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

Every semi-reputable journalist who bothered to talk to anyone got the Cubs and Tigers to call it hogwash:

"I don't pay attention to rumors," he said. "I'm always rumored. I'm one of them guys that are multi-talented, can do a lot of things. I'm not surprised. It's just a rumor."

A Cubs official then told Bradley the rumor was "100 percent untrue." Bradley began berating the media for spreading the rumor, calling it "garbage." A few minutes later, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said he hasn't spoken to any team about Bradley.

As someone who knows a thing or two about the rules of sources and off-the-recordness, it's pretty clear one of two things happened:

1. Steve Stone and Dave Kaplan have terrible sources who enjoy embarrassing them, as if they need any help in that department.

2. Steve Stone and Dave Kaplan asked questions that would elicit only one response. For example, "Given the demise of Maggs, would the Tigers be interested in Milton Bradley if the Cubs absorbed a huge percentage of his salary and demanded next to nothing in return."

The latter could elicit a "perhaps, but only as a DH" answer, that then allowed them to report what they reported.

The only other possible answer would seem to be that Stone and Kaplan are reenacting "Mean Girls" and spreading lies about their enemies through the considerable stages they have unfortunately been provided.
