A Wonderful Dilemma For The Nationals

Fresh off of failing to sign their first-round pick in 2008 due to a dispute over $750,000 (smaller than Jim Bowden's cut, I'm sure), the Washington Nationals are in the unfortunate position of having to draft the best pitcher in the history of sports.

As Half Street Blues notes, Stephen Strasburg's awesomeness puts the Nationals in a bad way for several reasons:

1. They have to sign their first round pick this year after last year's debacle.

2. Strasburg is represented by Scott Boras.

3. Scott Boras is aware of No. 1.

4. Scott Boras therefore will demand eleventy bazillion dollars (rounding to the nearest bazillion).

5. The Nationals will have to pay.

Or they could just opt to draft someone else for signability reasons. But if I were that player's agent, I would notice point one and then say "You drafted my guy ahead of Stephen Strasburg. I want twelvety bazillion dollars."

And the Nationals will have to pay. All because of $750,000 last summer.
