Dusty Plays Nostradamus
Written by wrigleyville
Sunday, 29 March 2009

Back on March 11, Dusty correctly predicted that Kevin Gregg won the closer's job. In several comments on posts since then again made that argument.

Well, Kevin Gregg has won the closer's job. Easily.

So to those who mocked me -- you know who you are -- I'd like to tell you to kiss my internet bleep.

But instead, you'll just need to live with the fact that no one who posts or comments on this blog knows Lou better than me. None. You can't touch me. The fact most of you never even fathomed this as a possibility showed remarkable blindness.

Fact 1:

Lou got Kevin Gregg in the first place because he had no confidence in Carlos Marmol as closer. At least not at this point. (I still maintain Carlos can still earn that role.)

Fact 2:

The day Lou got Kevin Gregg, Kevin Gregg was the closer unless he completely imploded during spring training. He didn't.

Fact 3:

The day Lou told Carlos he could go play in WBC and didn't need to worry about that impacting his decision on who would be closer -- proved Facts 2 and 3.

Fact 4:

When Carlos blew the save at WBC, it didn't create unnecessary handwringing or over-reaction to one blown save on a big stage. It was viewed by Lou was how the kid would do on the next big stage: September or October, or sooner. And he clearly isn't ready for that stage.

Fact 5:

Lou knows the value of proven experience in the closer spot. He saw that in Gregg; he didn't see it in Marmol. It's why he stuck with Woody, despite some blown saves, last year. He liked Woody's experience and composure under pressure. Marmol hasn't shown that composure under pressure consistently yet.

Fact 6:

The fact Lou went with Woody as closer last year was a huge clue as to who was going to close this year. Particularly when you couple that fact with the signing of Gregg.

Fact 7:

Lou's a spinner. He's a gamester. You need to look deep into his comments. He's messing with you but beneath the messing are his tidbits to his true thinking.

Fact 8:

I'm older than any of you. I'm crankier than any of you. I don't live in a world of stats in making decisions; I live in the world of real human beings and how they react in pressure situations. I know Lou far better than any of you because I'm more like Lou than any of you.

So from here on out, you can toss at me on any slurs and slams -- except Lou and managerial decisions.....and basically anything baseball related.

Don't doubt me again on any Lou dos. Just think twice before mocking me so meanly you meanies.

Love,

Dusty
