Gordon Wittenmyer opens an otherwise harmless story thusly:

MESA, Ariz. -- It's one of the great head-scratchers involving the Cubs as they come off two seasons of fortunate health and success on the field:

Why, after finally extricating themselves from the Mark Prior-Kerry Wood era of constant ache and misfortune, would they pin so much of their 2009 hopes on a pitcher (Rich Harden) and an outfielder (Milton Bradley) with such checkered histories of injuries?

How much are they actually banking on Harden, let alone Milton Bradley?

Unlike Prior and Wood, who only had a young Carlos Zambrano backing them up, Harden is joined in the rotation by Zambrano, Ted Lilly and Ryan Dempster.

As for Bradley, he is undoubtedly an important part of the equation. But should the worst happen, the Cubs slide Kosuke Fukudome over to right field - the same position he played on a 97-win team. That leaves Reed Johnson lonely in center, but there are others on the roster who can keep him company out there.

While it certainly wouldn't be optimal to have Harden or Bradley out for a long period of time, it would not be akin to losing Wood or Prior, circa 2005.
