New York Times Struggling With Math, Facts

The New York Times, taking its cue from Carville & Co., weighed in on Rush Limbaugh's hold over the Republican Party in a predictable story from Manhattan's West Side.

While no huge fan of Limbaugh (haven't listened since college), I am a fan of accuracy in journalism. On the latter, Timothy Egan of the Times fails after earlier tweaking Rush for making a factual error in his CPAC speech:

In 2003, Limbaugh said quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted a black to succeed. Over the next six years, McNabb threw for nearly 150 touchdowns and went to a Super Bowl.

Very impressive. Except it isn't true.

Between 2003-2008, McNabb threw for 123 touchdowns. So "nearly 150" isn't close to being correct - off by a factor of 20 percent. In fact, Egan is wrong even if he was rounding to the nearest 150.

Even adding in the playoff touchdowns, which isn't standard practice in the sportswriting world, McNabb only threw for 138. That would be "nearly 140."

But McNabb did go to a Super Bowl. Which he lost.
