Of Sammy Sosa And This Thing Called Clutch

Our post on Sammy Sosa this morning generally brought the regulars together in the belief that it is time to make one of the three greatest Chicago Cubs in history part of the Cub family again.

Not everyone was on board, however, including this comment from someone named Rotofeed (I do not believe this to be his/her real name):

Screw that. Sammy let me down on multiple levels. He didn't just 'roid. He corked. He pretended not to speak English when people asked him tough questions. And he even quit early one year. How many of those juice aided home runs were clutch, anyway? How many were the reason the Cubs won games? Very few - he was King of the meaningless 8th inning solo home run. Sammy should stay away.

Well then. As many of you know, we believe that some comments warrant their own post, along with a response, which you will find here:

1. Sammy doesn't owe you a thing - and never did. He's a baseball player, not your father.

2. The corking and the allegations of steroids are well discussed. If you can't get past that, so be it. I presume you feel "let down" by a huge percentage of major leaguers over the last 15 years?

3. How many of his home runs were "clutch," you ask? Good question, which you could have looked up yourself before asking and (incorrectly) answering such an easily answerable question.

Sammy Sosa hit 609 home runs in his career. Of those, he hit:

a. 161 with the game tied.
b. 145 with the Cubs up by one run or down by one run.
c. 100 with the Cubs up by two or down by two.
d. 63 with the Cubs up by three or down by three.
e. 140 with the Cubs up by at least four or down by at least four.
f. 10 walkoff home runs - the same as Bonds, Reggie Jackson and Michael Jack Schmidt, and more than Junior, McGwire, Killebrew, Palmiero, A-Rod, Manny, Frank Thomas and Eddie Murray.

In other words, Sammy Sosa hit a ton of home runs with the game on the line. Next question?

It's time to bring Sammy back.
