Richard Justice, Flip-Flopping

Richard Justice has spent the entire offseason insisting the National League Central is a winnable division, but changes his tune entirely today.

First, let's look at what's he's said over the last few months:

1. On November 11, he wrote thisThe National League Central is there for the taking. If the Astros re-sign Wolf and do nothing else, they might finish ahead of everyone except the Cubs. (WV note: The Dodgers signed Randy Wolf.)

2. On December 13, he wrote thisIf you're inclined to write off this season before it begins, don't. In nine of the past 12 seasons, the Astros have made the playoffs or entered the final weekend in contention. They'll be in a winnable division in 2009 and can be competitive if a few things go right. Let's run down the list: Hampton and Kaz Matsui need to stay healthy; Wandy Rodriguez and Brian Moehler have to win 30 games and pitch 350 innings. And most important of all, the Astros must get something from their farm system.

3. On February 1, he wrote thisI still like the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central. Who cares if the Cubs have spent like drunken sailors? The Cubs have thrown money around the last three winters, and all it has gotten them is more disappointment. Does anyone think Milton Bradley is going to decide a division race?

Finally, he writes the following today:

The Cubs once more are the favorites. For good reason, too. GM Jim Hendry has built a terrific team, and through two post-season disappointments, he has kept adding pieces. This season he'll celebrate a finished product. The Cubs have more depth in the lineup and more quality in the rotation. There are bullpen questions, but it won't be enough to keep them from winning this division. By October, those issues will be settled. Can any other team stay in contention? The Brewers will be better, slightly, than people think. The Pirates and Reds are still rebuilding. The Astros are a patchwork team of aging veterans and unproven kids. They could win 90 games or lose 90.

Keep us posted, Richard.
