Attendance And The Cubs In 2009

Judging by home and road attendance figures, the Chicago Cubs are the biggest draw in baseball so far this season.

The Cubs are drawing 39,366 a game at Wrigley (95.7 percent capacity), 38,205 a game on the road (85.3 percent capacity) and 38,760 a game overall (90 percent capacity).

As a percent of capacity, that ranks third at home (behind the Red Sox and Phillies), second on the road (behind Arizona, which has oddly played just seven road games this year, in San Francisco and Milwaukee) and first overall.

The home attendance is predictable; the road attendance is a function of their drawing power and the fact that they have played at the Chicago suburb of Milwaukee, in Houston for the opening series, at rival and good baseball town St. Louis, and at Arizona, a hotbed of Cub fandom.

Trips to Pittsburgh and Florida will draw that average down a bit, though they played in front of 81.6 percent capacity on the road and 90 percent capacity overall in 2008.
