Jake Peavy Holds All The Cards
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 21 May 2009
For those who kept preaching that the Cubs didn't have enough to get Jake Peavy, the moves and failed moves today of the San Diego Padres should be instructive:

Peavy, 28, owed $63 million through 2012, informed the Padres last winter that he wanted to stay in the National League. He consented to be traded to the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves or Houston Astros. Barry Axelrod, Peavy's agent, said Thursday that Peavy never altered his stance.

The Padres also sent Jody Gerut to Milwaukee for Tony Gwynn Jr., if only because Jody Gerut was owed $1.775 million for 2009 (to Gwynn's $405,000). If they can't afford that, they certainly can't afford $63 million.

And Jake just made it clear he ain't going to just any team the Padres can make a deal with.

So ... no team - including the Cubs - is going to overpay for Peavy. The Padres are in a pickle.
