Steve Phillips Baffled By Economics

Caught a few seconds of Colin Cowherd and Steve Phillips discussing Jake Peavy on my radio machine, with Cowherd suggesting the New York Mets should consider trading Jose Reyes or Carlos Beltran to San Diego for Peavy.

Phillips at first seemed dismissive but suggested the Mets should consider sending Beltran to the Padres in the offseason, where he could "roam that big center field."

Grand idea, guys! Except:

1. The Padres are in full selling mode now.

2. The Mets aren't on Peavy's approved list.

3. The Padres are in full selling mode now.

The first and last points are the most important here, as the Padres want to move Peavy for a very clear and well-reported reason: They can't afford to pay him the remaining $63 million on his contract (not to mention a $22 million option).

Given that, adding Beltran's $20 million annual salary for 2010 and 2011 (that's a total of $40 million) would seem like a non-starter for the Padres, no?

Beyond that, thanks for the insight, fellas.
