Odds Are Rick Morrissey Hates Statistics
Written by wrigleyville
Sunday, 22 November 2009
I'm guessing a statistic stole Rick Morrissey's lunch money or made him try to add seven and four in front of the class when he was a child. Whatever it is, he's hostile: Statistics are sucking the life out of baseball. - The lead on Morrissey's Sunday morning column on Curtis Granderson, which isn't about statistics at all or the removal of life from baseball. But Morrissey isn't bound by the shackles of journalism. Or logic. As it is, stats freaks are taking over player-personnel departments. The new-breed general managers are slaves to their computers. Couldn't we leave something open to the vagaries of being human? - May 2008 name-calling in a column in which he argued that he wanted more blown calls in baseball because he likes to see grown men get angry. But it does matter. Baseball might be in danger of being taken over by stat freaks, but defense is important, as hard to quantify as it sometimes is.August 2008 column on Ken Griffey Jr. joining the White Sox. And another: Is there a stats-freak formula that suggests when to shut down a season? Is a six-game deficit on Aug. 31 similar to a bad OPS, OBP or Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da?September 2009 column, calling Kenny Williams a "traitor" for trading Jose Contreras and Jim Thome in August. While we don't dabble much in statistics in these parts, we aren't afraid they are sucking the soul out of a game. The more the merrier, says we.
