Paul Sullivan Gives Lessons On Economics, Empty Glasses
Written by wrigleyville
Friday, 20 November 2009
The ever-prescient Paul Sullivan uncovers the stunning truth that spending large amounts of money on some players limits the amount of money you can spend on other players in an environment in which you don't have unlimited resources. Hard to believe he didn't pursue a career in economics. In his never-ending quest to smear Milton Bradley and Alfonso Soriano, Sullivan says it's their fault the Cubs have very little money to work with this offseason. He even says it's their fault the Cubs had to trade Aaron Heilman yesterday. One would think Cubs fans should thank Soriano and Bradley for that one. He also includes this bit of mess on Soriano: What have the Cubs gotten out of the deal so far? A pair of division titles, but no postseason victories or RBIs by Soriano. In his three seasons in Chicago, Soriano has hit .275 and averaged 27 home runs, 16 stolen bases and 67 RBIs. Glass half-empty kind of way at looking at things, isn't it? Sullivan could have written the following about the same player: What have the Cubs gotten out of the deal so far? Back to back division titles for the first time ever and three straight winning seasons for the first time in 37 years and just the second time in 70 years. In his three seasons in Chicago, Soriano has suffered through a series of injuries but has hit .275 and averaged 27 home runs, 16 stolen bases and 67 RBIs, largely out of the leadoff spot. Just depends on your perspective, doesn't it? There's no denying the Soriano contract is a problem, but I - for one - am not upset about the decision the Cubs made in 2006. Have to bet big to win big. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
