Will Curtis Granderson Cure Everything?
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 12 November 2009
While Curtis Granderson is a nice ballplayer, does anyone agree with Phil Rogers and others that the Cubs have to - have to! - trade for him? Rogers: As a left-handed hitter, he is a very nice fit for the Cubs. He has a very reasonable contract that, not including a 2013 option, is $23.75 million for three years. And as an intelligent, uncannily cool presence, he's the next best thing to Derek Jeter. Rogers then suggests trading Carlos Marmol and Starlin Castro for the "next best thing to Derek Jeter." If intelligence and an uncannily cool presence were all that were needed to improve the Cubs, Stephen Hawking and Arthur Fonzarelli are probably available - and they wouldn't have to give up Castro for them. But the Cubs likely are looking for a centerfielder who can hit and whatnot - something Granderson can do, but he's certainly not the cure-all Rogers implies. Especially for Cubs fans who anger easily at strikeout-prone outfielders who are paid money to play baseball. Consider: His OBP in 2009 was .327 (.344 for his career). More troublingly, he's basically a platoon in center. His career batting average against lefties is .210, which is only .210 higher than mine. His OBP is just .270, which is just .270 higher than mine. His SLG is .344, which is just .344 higher than mine. It was even worse in 2009 at .183/.245/.239. Yes, .239 SLG against lefties. Yikes. Though he was much, much better on the road then at home in that big-ass park where the Tigers play (.230/.307/.388 vs .267/.345/.516 in '09). Still, he's just 28 and those numbers undoubtedly would improve a bit in the National League and at Wrigley. Let's just not pretend he's Willie Mays, OK?
