Another Trib Fail: David Haugh Edition
Written by wrigleyville
Sunday, 25 October 2009
David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune wrote a snotty, bitchy column today about what a miserable person Cedric Benson was in his time with the Bears: Expressed in the trendy, 140-character-or-less form of communication preferred by the Bears and Bengals last week: @Ochocinco -- You should've told Ced to keep his mouth shut. Child, please. Everybody knows the Bears' D plays better angry. Back to the Tweet-free zone, if the Bears' defense responds as expected Sunday to Cedric Benson casting aspersions on his former employer, he will have done what he rarely did in Chicago. That is, contribute to a Bears victory. The stat sheet showing Benson as the NFL's third-leading rusher convinced many he had changed since he left Halas Hall. Then Benson opened his mouth. It revealed only the uniform is different. The man inside sounded familiarly lame. This was before Benson put up 189 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' 45-10 pasting of the Bears. Clever. And then there was this: Too slow, too soft and too often a distraction, Benson averaged 3.8 yards per worry with the Bears. He was as hard to figure out off the field as he was easy to catch on it. He was not anywhere close to being as good as his Texas-sized legend promised when the Bears took him fourth overall in the '05 draft. The fraud started on Day One when a city conditioned to worship running backs thought the tears rolling down Benson's cheeks on draft day were genuine products of pride and joy over coming to Chicago. In fact, as a source close to Benson later related to illustrate the root of his bad feelings toward the Bears front office, he was crying because he was upset the team drafted him at all. It concludes was this bit of loveliness: @CedBenson -- If you thought the Bears roughed you up in practice as a teammate, how do you think they'll treat you in a game as an opponent? LOL. LOL, indeed, David Haugh. And, by the way, does anyone else expect a Trib sportswriter to write something similar about Milton Bradley next summer when he's putting up big numbers in another uniform?
