Let's Help Rick Morrissey Out

Rick Morrissey of the Trib rips Kenny Williams for trading Jim Thome and Jose Contreras because ... well, Morrissey apparently likes older gentlemen.

The headline on the story reads:

"Despite rich history of improbably comebacks, Chicago White Sox just giving up"

What, you ask, is this rich history of comebacks similar to the Sox, who are seven games back?

Morrissey can come up with precisely three instances in the last 75 seasons:

Did the Rockies think the same thing in 2007, when they were six games behind in the wild-card race on Sept. 1? They won 14 of their last 15 regular-season games and made it to the World Series. Or how about the 1969 Mets, who trailed the Cubs by 8 1/2 games in mid-August and, well, you know what happened? Or the 1935 Cubs, who went 23-1 after Aug. 31 to win the National League pennant? Or any of the other teams that have done the unthinkable by going on a September run to the playoffs?

Rich history indeed! By writing it this way, Rick makes it look like his column is based on three examples in 75 years - certainly not a good bet for Williams to make.

So let's help Rick out. There are more recent examples, aren't there?

Example one: 2007 Phillies. Seven games behind Mets on September 12. Won the division.
