Just when I thought it was a bad idea to send Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen, this comes across my Google machine from Phil Rogers:

There's no doubt the Cubs need more arms — plural — in their bullpen, and they have needed them pronto. But this move could blow up on so many fronts that I almost don't know where to start.

For one, it's based on a theory that they have a surplus of starting pitchers. This will be valid truly only if Ted Lilly returns from shoulder surgery looking like the guy who went 44-26 over the last three years. It's too early to know what fairly can be expected from him.

For another, Zambrano hasn't been used in a relief role regularly since 2002. He spent the last three months — at least — conditioning on a daily basis to pitch every fifth days. He always has had a durable arm, which he will need, but who knows how his body will react to the uncertain workload in which guys like Jeff Nelson, Turk Wendell, Scott Radinsky and Heath Bell have succeeded?

Piniella had other choices in his bullpen. Ryan Dempster, Carlos Silva or Randy Wells were better choices than the highly combustible Big Z for a variety of reasons. There was one thing they didn't offer as much of, however — shock value.

Piniella must have wanted a shocking move. He got himself one.

As well know, Phil Rogers is wrong about everything.

Coupled with the Cubs win tonight, this has me feeling better about this little experiment already.
