A day after Lou Piniella said Starlin Castro would get a chance to start if Ryan Theriot got hurt, he sent a minor leaguer out to plunk Theriot during batting practice:

MESA, Ariz. -- Cubs shortstop Ryan Theriot has a bruise on his left hand after being hit by a fastball by young pitcher Rafael Dolis during live batting practice Thursday.

"Everything's fine," Theriot said. "It happens sometimes in live [batting practice], but everything's cool."

It was clearly done on purpose, right? The Cubs are pretending it wasn't:

"The kid pitcher felt worse about it than anybody else," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "He was almost apologetic, and I heard the pitching coach say, 'Get back up there and throw it.'"

I'm skeptical:

Did Theriot consider charging the mound?

"No -- that guy's huge," Theriot said of the 6-foot 4-inch, 215-pound right-hander.

So they sent a bully out to maim one of the smallest guys on the team.

"It's going to happen," Piniella said. "First time out for some of these kids and they're a little nervous, they're trying to impress and overthrow the ball a little bit. Somebody's going to get plunked. You just hope nobody is hurt seriously, and in this case it's just a bruise."
