Derrek Lee Not Thinking Extension

Chicago Cubs vs Houston Astros

Derrek Lee and the Cubs won't be talking extension during the season:

MESA, Ariz. -- Derrek Lee signed a five-year, $65 million deal in spring training of 2006, taking less than market value after leading the National League in hitting and smacking 46 home runs in '05.

Now Lee is entering the final year of his contract and doesn't know what the future has in store. The Cubs did not open up negotiations over the winter, and it could be Lee's final year with the Cubs.

"It could be," he said. "It's crossed my mind, but I'm not going to approach them. I just want to go play."

The Cubs have no plans to give any extensions to players this spring, and Lee said once the season starts he will "probably not" open up talks.

That, coupled with Aramis Ramirez being able to opt out after this season, could free up a lot of money in a good free agent year. Or tie up money in aging veterans. Either way.
