Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano homers against the Houston Astros

It wouldn't be spring in Mesa unless we had to rehash this question in the media:

MESA, Ariz. -- Could Alfonso Soriano wind up back in the leadoff spot for the Cubs?

Soriano seems to think it's possible, and the left fielder says he's open to a move back to the top spot if the team's plans with Ryan Theriot and Kosuke Fukudome don't work out.

''I'd be open if I feel good,'' said Soriano, whose surgically repaired left knee fared well during his first day of spring training drills Tuesday.

''I feel very comfortable batting leadoff. If they don't do the job like I didn't do the job last year, maybe they put me back batting leadoff, if I feel good. So it depends on how I feel and depends what they do, too, batting leadoff.''

There must be something to this, if Gordon Wittenmyer is dedicated precious column inches to the idea. Right?

''Oh, no,'' (Lou Piniella) said, ''We're not going to ask him to do that. We're going to stick with it this way. We're going to keep him in an RBI spot.''

That must have Soriano disappointed. Right?

That's fine with Soriano, too.

''If you're batting leadoff, I can hit a lot of base hits and homers with nobody on base, but if you're batting fifth or sixth, I can hit a homer or base hit with somebody on base and that's more RBIs for the team. Either way I can help the team, that's the most important thing.''

Sigh. The headline on this monstrosity? "Bit of disorder in Cubs' court"
