The Brewers are talking tough with Corey Hart, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel:
I'm at the Brewers' "On Deck" event and I just spoke with team negotiator Teddy Werner. He told me the club has taken it's latest offer to rightfielder Corey Hart off the table and the arbitration case is headed for a hearing in Tampa in a couple of weeks.
"We made a final offer that we thought was a good offer," said Werner. "It's significantly higher than the number we filed. They didn't like it. I said, 'See you in Tampa in a couple of weeks.'"
The Brewers filed for $4.15 million in arbitration, with Hart requesting $4.8 million. That would make the midpoint $4.475 million. Last year, Hart made $3.25 million.
They started $650,000 apart. Let's say that "signifcantly higher" offer is another $200,000 - bringing their offer to within $450,000.
Are the Brewers - and Hart - really willing to go to arbitration over $450,000? Seems rather petty, and it seems the "On Deck" event is an odd place to share that message with the public.
The again, the Brewers have a point: Hart was worth just $3.2 million last year, according to FanGraphs, after seasons worth $18.3 million and $4.6 million in two previous years.
