Cubs Are Jeopardizing Public Safety
Written by wrigleyville

Or something like that, according to the 5-0 in Mesa:

MESA -- The Cubs are the valley's biggest draw of spring training, and they're staying in Mesa. It's a big win for fans and businesses.

But Mesa Police say that since the city is going to be bringing in the tourism bucks, they want a cut.

Mesa Police provides officers during the spring training games. In the past, Mesa has provided those officers to the Cubs for free -- but now they're understaffed, and something's got to give.

The Mesa Police Department is already short 400 officers, so if they have to patrol the new stadium, that'll mean fewer officers on the streets.

They want the city to guarantee that some of the money generated from the new spring training stadium will go towards hiring more officers.

"The budget situation right now is very dire," says Fabian Cota of the Mesa Police Association. "We want to make sure that whatever deal they strike, that it includes enough resources for us to be able to adequately police all the new areas that are developed."

Short 400 officers? Yikes. But are the Cubs really a major burden on public safety? They're only in town for a couple months, and it would seem there is some obligation by the city to police any area where 15,000 people are gathered at any one time - whether it's a baseball game, fireworks display or Shakespeare on the Park.

Even so, the city has seen a three-year decline in crime. Good job, Vicki Myers!
