HOF Voter Lies While Questioning Mac's Honesty
Written by wrigleyville

Noted kinesiologist Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel takes Mark McGwire to task for claiming on the MLB Network that he only took steroids for health purposes - and not to hit more home runs (and other baseball-related activities).

"I was given the gift to hit home runs," said McGwire. "The only reason I took steriods was for health purposes. I got no power benefit. I did not take this for any strength purposes."

Curious statement - and just a sliver of what McGwire said today. But Haudricourt is so worked up over McGwire's claim that he basically calls the former slugger a liar who is "totally suspending disbelief" - just before admitting that he himself is a liar (or at the very least intellectually dishonest):

McGwire said he wasn't doing this to curry more favor in Hall of Fame voting, which might be true. But I highly doubt that he'll get the 75% votes necessary for election after admitting he cheated. He got only 23.7% this year. I haven't voted for him because he wouldn't come forward and say anything, but now that he did and admitted he cheated, I probably still won't vote for him. I certainly don't like this line of thinking that it didn't help his performance.

So, Haudricourt claims that he had previously not voted for McGwire "because he wouldn't come forward and say anything." But now that McGwire has come forward and said something, he still doesn't get Haudricourt's vote for three possible reasons (it wasn't entirely clear from the column):

1. McGwire admitted he cheated (which had previously been the stated barrier for not earning Haudricourt's vote). This seems to be what he was saying.

2. Haudricourt doesn't like McGwire's "line of thinking" about whether the substances helped his performance. A kinesiology debate at the heart of a Hall of Fame vote. Interesting.

3. Haudricourt simply doesn't think McGwire has Hall of Fame numbers. This doesn't come up in the column.

Whatever the reason, it was clear McGwire would never have won Haudricourt's vote - because he was a suspected liar, an admitted cheater, a poor kinesiology student or not a good enough baseball player.
