Mesa Delivers Ransom Money To Cubs

Turn down Matlock and break out the Metamucil! The Cubs are another important step closer to staying in Mesa for their practice games:

The Mesa City Council Monday evening approved its proposal to spend $84 million for a new spring training complex for the Cubs and is now awaiting official word from the team, which is expected within days.

If the Cubs board approves the proposal for a new 15,000-seat stadium modeled after Wrigley Field, the two parties would enter into an exclusive negotiations period.

Not only would the Cubs operate the new complex, which would be built east of HoHoKam Park along the 202 Freeway, but they would try to find another team to take over the old site.

The Cubs have not ruled out a move to Naples, Fla., but sources say that is only an "in case" scenario, one which should be cleared up later this week.

The new spring training site sounds nicer than Wrigley, by the way. Maybe they could just stay out there and play in the NL West?
