Retire Dawson's Number? Get In Line, Andre

Let's play everybody's favorite online game ... "Which player should have their number retired by the Cubs?"

Player A: .303/.368/.551, 173 HR, 591 RBI, 479 R, 131 OPS+ in six full seasons.

Player B: .285/.327/.507, 174 HR, 587 RBI, 431 R, 125 OPS+ in six full seasons.

Player C: .304/.384/.539, 163 HR, 518 RBI, 515 R, 133 OPS+ in six full seasons.

None? All? One?

Perhaps this will help. For comparison's sake, here are the numbers of the batters whose numbers are already retired by the Cubs:

Ryne Sandberg: .285/.344/.452, 282 HR, 1,061 RBI, 1,318 R, 114 OPS+ in 15 seasons.

Billy Williams: .296/.364/.503, 392 HR, 1,353 RBI, 1,306 R, 135 OPS+ in 16 seasons.

Ernie Banks: .274/.330/.500, 512 HR, 1,636 RBI, 1,305 R, 122 OPS+ in 19 seasons.

Ron Santo: .279/.366/.472, 337 HR, 1,290 RBI, 1,109 R, 127 OPS+ in 14 seasons.

And one player whose number they haven't - and likely won't - retire:

Sammy Sosa: .284/.358/.569, 545 HR, 1,414 RBI, 1,245 R, 139 OPS+ in 13 seasons.

So, by all means, retire Andre Dawson's number in a cheap bid to have him go into the Hall of Fame as a Cub. But if his success as a Cub is the standard for retiring numbers, the Cubs are quickly going to be out of numbers under 50 for players in the years to come.
