Candidates and teams backed by President Obama have had a rough few months - from governor races in Virginia and blue New Jersey to the recent Massachusetts Senate special election to the White Sox (10 games worse in 2009) to the Bears (two games worse in 2009).

Now, the president is infecting teams he doesn't even root for on a regular basis:

One request, Mr. President, even though I didn't vote for you: Please, please, please take a moment out of your important doings over the next 11 days to call Drew Brees and wish him well in the Super Bowl.

(And don't call Peyton Manning. He's a Republican anyway.)

URGENT UPDATE: The president is backing the Saints, saying:

"You know, I think both teams are terrific," the nation's 44th president said of Super Bowl 44 during an ABC News interview Monday night. "I guess I am rooting a little bit for the Saints as the underdog, partly just because when I think about what's happened in New Orleans over the last several years and how much that team means to them. You know, I'm pretty sympathetic."
