Let's take one last look at the nuttery that is Fergie Jenkins' statement on Mark McGwire:

"You have not even begun to apologize to those you have harmed," Jenkins wrote. "You have yet to apologize to all the pitchers you faced while juiced. You altered pitchers' lives. You may have shortened pitchers' careers because of the advantage you (had) while juiced.

"Have you thought about what happened when they couldn't get you out and lost the confidence of their managers and general managers? You even managed to alter the place some athletes have achieved in record books by making your steroid-fueled run to the season home run record."

OK, we'll bite, Fergie. What about the pitchers who juiced?

Here are some of the pitchers named in the Mitchell Report and how many times they struck out McGwire in their careers (with ranking of number of times McGwire struck out against pitcher):

Well, then. McGwire struck out 76 times in his career against pitchers named in the Mitchell Report.

I wonder if they (and Jenkins) have thought about what happened when McGwire couldn't get on base and lost the confidence of his managers and general managers. They even managed to alter the place McGwire and other athletes have achieved in record books by making their steroid-fueled run to their career numbers.

Now, please, Fergie and Ryno and Whitey and Pudge and Ozzie and all of you other ballplayers with Disneyesque names: Can we end the business of scapegoating Mark McGwire and accept some basic truths:

1. There was cheating in the batters box and on the pitchers mound.

2. There was cheating on every team throughout the league.

3. More than likely, that cheating balanced itself out over the long haul - and, if it didn't, we have no way of knowing which teams may have won which game and which division title and which World Series in which year.

Enough already.
