WV23 Investigation: Mac Owes Bulldog An Apology
Written by wrigleyville

There is much buzz in the world about Fergie Jenkins laying into Mark McGwire:

"You have not even begun to apologize to those you have harmed."

"How many pitchers do you think he ended their careers by hitting numbers of home runs off them?" Jenkins said during a telephone interview Wednesday.

At first, we thought Fergie had finally lost his drug-addled mind. But then it occurred to us htat he may be on to something. And we set out to find the pitchers owed an apology by Mark McGwire.

It didn't take long to find the first one: Orel Leonard Hershiser IV.

That's right. Based on exhaustive study by the crack Wrigleyville23 research team, we have concluded that Mark McGwire ended Bulldog's career on June 24, 2000.

Consider the following chart, which includes the 12 pitchers who gave up five or more home runs to McGwire in their careers (another 14 gave up four homers to McGwire, but we had to cut it off somewhere). It shows the number of home runs given up to McGwire, the date of the first and last homers, and the games pitched after the first (GAF) and last (GAL) homers given up:

This is a damning document - one that should haunt McGwire until the end of his days and keep him out of the Hall of Fame for good.

Clearly, by taking steroids, he ended Hershiser's career that June day in 2000 when he hit a two-run homer in the first. Hershiser couldn't make it out of the second inning and managed to retire just five batters in his next outing - the final game of his career.

Sure, Hershiser was 41 years old, had a 13.14 ERA and a 1-5 record on the year. But that last homer he gave up to McGwire "ended his career," in the words of Jenkins.

So, let's have it, Mac. Fergie's right. You have not begun to apologize to those you have harmed. Start with Hershiser. Then move on to Eric King. And we'll be busy making a fuller list of pitchers whose careers you ruined.

Shame.
