Z Worth More Than Bag Of Balls
Written by wrigleyville
Monday, 04 January 2010

While they are pondering a Carlos Zambrano trade at Another Cubs Blog and elsewhere on the Internets, they are late to the party: Phil Rogers has been campaigning to get Z out of the North Side since shortly after this blog was born.

In February 2007, Rogers suggested trading Zambrano - rather than re-signing him - because the Phillies were able to move Bobby Abreu the year before. Last year, Rogers famously said the Cubs should trade him for a "bag of balls" because he doesn't like Z's attitude.

In his latest column, Rogers says one of his greatest wishes for 2010 is to get rid of the Venezuelan menace:

Cubs GM Jim Hendry finding a way to move Carlos Zambrano or Alfonso Soriano off his payroll, regaining some flexibility lost as Tribune Co. spent wildly in the first two years of the Lou Piniella era, evidently intent as much on raising the sale price of the team as on winning. Like items in George Clooney's imaginary backpacks in the movie "Up in the Air," the back-loaded contracts are weighing down the franchise. Among the highest-paid at their positions, Soriano and Zambrano ranked 68th and 69th, respectively, among outfielders and pitchers in Bill James' Win Shares last season.

Holy selective endpoints, Batman! Nice of him to dabble in limited statistics.

But let's take at some other statistics that tell the full story of Zambrano's time with the Cubs. Since becoming a fulltime starter in 2003, Zambrano is:

1. 7th in baseball in wins (for those who value wins)

2. 7th in winning percentage (among pitchers with 100 decisions)

3. 7th in ERA

4. 4th in ERA+

5. 9th in innings pitched (the other eight all spent time in the American League)

6. 5th in strikeouts

While we don't oppose moving Z for true value, Rogers is on record saying one of the most consistent and effective pitchers in baseball should be traded for nothing at all.

That would be, well, dumb.

(Update: Around The Horn Baseball makes the case for why the Mets should stay away from Z. Good points all, but that in no way contradicts Rogers' bag of balls argument.)
