Will Castro Get Pied?

MLB: Cubs v Rangers June 21, 2007

Well, then. Starlin Castro has been called up - creating the big question: Will he get a chance?

Or will he get a week's worth of at-bats and then yanked around, sent down, called up, serve as a defensive replacement for a week at a time, sent back down and ultimately traded for pennies on the dollar?

Can't happen? Let's look at Felix Pie, the last sure-thing to come from the Cubs' farm system:

(click "read more" for full article)

2007

April 17-30, 11 games, 9 starts: .233/.250/.419 in 43 at-bats.

May 1-9, 7 games, 0 starts: 6 at-bats as a defensive replacement.

May 10: Sent to Iowa.

June 2: Called up.

June 3-June 29,25 games, 21 starts: .221/.200/.337 in86 at-bats (98 plate appearances)

July 2-July 7, 4 games, 0 starts: 3 at-bats as a defensive replacement.

July 8: Sent to Iowa.

August 8: Called up.

August 8-September 30, 39 games, 6 starts: .211/.268/.289 in 38 at-bats (42 plate appearances)

And 2007 was the best chance he got with the Cubs. As the top prospect.

2008

March 31-May 12, 30 games, 15 starts: .222/.286/.286 in 63 at-bats (70 plate appearances)

March 13: Sent to Iowa.

September 9: Called up.

September 9-September 27, 13 games, 3 starts: .300/.391/.450 in 20 at bats (23 plate appearances)

Offseason: Traded to Baltimore for Hank Williamson and Garrett Olson.

So there you have it. The Cubs' former can't-miss prospect got 260 at-bats to prove he was a major leaguer. Comparatively, in his season and a month in Baltimore, he has had 272 plate appearances and posted batting averages and OBPs that are 50 points higher - and a slugging percentage that is 170 points higher than in Chicago.

Curious.

Will Starlin Castro fare any better?
