Cubs Ranked 5th In Salary In '07

With a payroll of $115.9 million, though some of that went to Mark Prior so it shouldn't count. In fact, in the words of Kramer, they should be able to write it off.

It's no surprise that the Yankees led the way at $218.3 million. They took in $415 million and gave away $100 million as part of the league's revenue-sharing plan - or nearly the combined payrolls of Tampa ($31.8 million), Florida ($33.1 million) and Washington ($43.3 million).

Update: By the way, this is a stark reminder of the goofiness of revenue sharing - and how certain teams coast along on the backs of successful franchises. In 2006, for example, the Devil Rays had a payroll of $35 million - while receiving $30 million in revenue sharing. For simplicity's sake, this would basically mean their real payroll was $5 million, no?

To receive revenue sharing, teams should have to commit to at the very least matching what they receive from other teams in their real salary payments. Therefore, if the Rays are to receive, say, $35 million this year they must commit to a $70 million total payroll (and it appears they have increased payroll significantly for '08 - just using them as an example).

The economists can probably tell me why I'm full of it on this one, but I'm speaking for the fan. And America. And the children. In Tampa. And Pittsburgh. And Kansas City.

Hey Dude! The Reds Will Be Noisy

FoxSports.com says the Cincinnati Reds could make some noise in '08, though the Cubs and Brewers are "better on paper."

Other teams that could by noisy? The Twins, Rays and Sammy-less Rangers.

2008 Cubs Schedule: Orioles, Jays & Rays!

Not a terribly difficult (or interesting) interleague schedule for the 2008 Cubs, with series at Toronto and Tampa and the Orioles in Chicago. And the home and home with the Sox.

Devil Rays Going Back To Basics

The Crime Dog signs on as a special advisor to the Devil Rays. As a bonus, all players get baseball instructional videos teaching techniques used by back to back to back AAU national championship teams. And awkward looking foam and mesh caps.
